Year 1/2 Information letter,

Term 1 2018.

 

 

Dear Parents,                                                                                                Tuesday 6th February, 2018.  


 

Welcome back to the start of 2018 in the Year 1/2 junior unit. We hope that you and your children enjoyed your school holidays and are excited about the term ahead. Term 1 is nine weeks, so we hope this note gives you some general information about the term ahead.


 

Curriculum Foci:

 

Inquiry Learning       How I can be the best ME?

 

We will:

  • Identify similarities and differences in people
  • Describe our own strengths and achievements and those of others, and identify how these contribute to personal identities
  • Describe ways to include others to make them feel that they belong
  • Identify and practise emotional responses that account for own and others’ feelings
  • Explore actions that help make the classroom a healthy, safe and active place


 

Religion – Prayer      How does prayer help me to grow in friendship with God?

 

We will learn that:

 

 

- Prayer is about listening for and responding to God’s presence in many different ways.

 

- God is with us always.

 

 

- Through prayer we come to know God better.

 

- People celebrate and pray together at different times and in different ways.

 

- Stories from Scripture help us to grow in friendship with God.


 

Numeracy     Number, Place Value and Data

 

This term we will identify the value of individual numbers and represent them in various ways. We will investigate number sequences and recognise patterns in number sequences.

 

We will explore the four-step process involved with data investigation and interpretation. These include: Question posing, Data collection, Data representation and Data interpretation/analysis.


 

Literacy-

 

Reading - Learn how to find ‘Good Fit’ books and build stamina as independent readers. Introduce the ‘Daily 5’ components (Read to Self, Read to Someone, Listen to Reading, Word Work and Work on Writing) which involves the students working independently toward personalised goals, while the teacher meets individual needs through whole-group & small-group instruction, including one-on-one conferencing.

 

 

Writing – In writing we will further explore our VCOP (Vocabulary, Connectives, Openers, Punctuation) and continue to develop our writing skills during the Big Write sessions.

 


Speaking & Listening – Oral language games and activities.  

 


Physical Education- Athletics skills preparation for Athletics carnival on Thursday 29th March.

 

Weekly PE sessions will be on Mondays (Week A) and Wednesdays (Week B) so to make it easier, children can come in Sports uniform on both these days each week.


 

Friday Rotations- On Fridays, the 1/2 students will have a ‘Rotation Day’ whereby they will move around to four different classrooms, in their own LC groups to participate in 4 x 1 hour sessions by the teachers in the 1/2 unit.  These rotations begin at 10am and conclude on the bell at 3:30pm and students will be dismissed by their last rotation teacher .

 

The rotations are covering the following curriculum areas:

Numeracy- Carin van Mourik in LC4 room

 

Wellbeing- Fran Wedding in LC5 room

 

ICT- Michelle de Sa in LC6 room

 


Take Home Readers -

 

Year one students are starting with a P.A.I.R. program in week 3 as their take home readers. Year two readers will be sent home with the children over the next couple of weeks.

 

We request that all students use their green satchel to transport these books to and from school so they remain in good condition. If your child does not have a green satchel they can be purchased from the uniform shop.


 

Home reading should be an enjoyable, daily experience for all and should take about 10-15 minutes in total. We ask that each day, you write the title of the book read by your child into the Student Diary.


 

Things you can do at home to support your child:


 

Please make sure your child is at school with time to unpack their bag and feel organised before the bell goes.

 

 

 

Make them responsible for packing and carrying their own bag.

 

 

Make reading and some counting/number games a regular priority in your home.

 

Prepare healthy lunches, including fruit for ‘Fruit Break’ and water to provide the energy to survive a busy day.

 

If your child has a problem at school; assure them that they will be alright. Discuss and make suggestions of strategies to help them work through the situation. If it does not resolve itself please come in to see us, so that we can work together on a resolution.


 

* We would appreciate each child bringing a box of tissues to school.

 

* Reminder about bringing art smocks to leave in the classroom.

1/2 Junior Teaching Team for 2018.

 

 

This year we have a fortnightly specialist program.  Details are as follows:

 

 

Monday: Week A - Library lessons - Children need to bring a library bag when they want to borrow a book.

 

Week A - Italian classes – Italian Room

 

Week A - Physical Education - Sports uniform is required on this day.

 

 

Wednesday: Week B –  Library (to return books and will need a library bag)

 

-  Italian

 

-    Sport (sports uniform required)

 

-    Arts – dance & drama

 

 

Thursday:   Music each week in the Music Room for the first 2 terms.

 

Friday:     Rotations – Children will move through 4 different activities each Friday

              3. Maths skills                               4. Religious Education – Godly Play

 

 

Children can wear their sports uniform each Monday and Wednesday.
